What License & Training Do You Need to Drive a Limo & More
State Drivers License – All professional chauffeurs will first require a regular state driver’s license. Driver Training School – Before any driver can apply to work at any limo company they will need to undergo all the proper training first. Some companies can train their own drivers according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. However, many will seek formal training. Most training programs take about 2 weeks to complete. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the training of a limo driver will include federal and state as well as local driving laws, road or driving safety, and other job-specific tasks. Records and paperwork is also part of the job. They will be schooled on what forms are necessary for recording their services for liability and extended safety precautions. During training school, they will be also taught how to drive oversized vehicles. There are a number of needed driving techniques that are necessary to smoothly and safely operate an oversized vehicle such as a stretch limo or party bus. Additionally, all drivers must possess excellent customer service.
Applying for Licenses – After school is completed and passed, all drivers must next apply for all proper licenses in order to become a chauffeur or driver. Each state or province may vary in which licenses are required. However, standard license includes a chauffeur license. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requires a basic driver’s license with an additional passenger certification if the driver will be transporting 16 or more passengers at one time.
Additional Skills – Some additional skills that drivers have is knowledge of the city and surrounding areas. They are familiar with roads, neighborhoods, and the best routes to the various destinations. Each driver becomes familiar with their vehicles and are able to troubleshoot traffic problems and other similar situations as they occur.
